So what are Unix servers? Unix servers are a type of computer operating system that is commonly used. Unix servers are now commonly referred to any operating system that is compatible with the original Unix system or operates the same as the Unix operating system. When Unix was first developed it was originally designed to be installed on medium sized computer systems. It was originally too large of an operating system to be placed on personal computers. However with the change over to C programming language, it was now possible to install it on personal computers.

When looking at the Unix operating system, there are two main types of Unix tools; Integral utilities and non essential utilities. Integral utilities are necessary for the operation of the computer. These tools can include the command interpreter and other tools to keep the operating system running. The non essential utilities include typesetting capabilities and email. How is the Unix operating system organized? The Unix operating system is functionally organized at three levels:

1. The Unix kernel- This kernel schedules tasks and manages storage on the Unix operating system. It is the heart of the operating system.
2. The Unix shell- The Unix shell connects and interprets users' commands, calls programs from memory, and executes them.
3. The Unix tools and applications- These tools and applications offer additional functionality to the operating system. Currently there are hundreds of tools and applications from third party companies. These tools include email programs, word processing, spread sheets, and computer programming.
